More Info Regarding File Extension CACHE
The most common error with the .cache file is due to improper file associations. This is caused by the use of the name "cache" used by almost every operating system and literally hundreds of computer programs. Operating systems create files and folders to store frequently used data for fast retrieval. A search of the operating system's root drive will reveal the extensive use of the name. Web browsers use the name as well, and sometimes even create a folder but name it with the file extension .cache, fooling the OS into thinking it's a file. Double clicking this file will result in the web browser opening. To avoid conflicts of this nature, it's recommended that users open all CAChe created files within the native software. In this case, changing file associations could cause other unwanted conflicts.
Errors will obviously occur if trying to open a non CAChe generated .cache file within the software. The program will not recognize a .cache file generated by a web browser, OS, or other piece of software, generating an "unable to open" error. These errors are harmless and pose no threat to the operation of the computer. If users encounter this type of error they should check the name of the file to be sure it is indeed a MolStruct output file. Generally the name will have some relation to the author or chemical structure.
Errors have been reported when the CAChe program itself becomes corrupted, not allowing .cache data to be generated properly or opened in a later session. Recovery is only possible by completely removing and then reinstalling the CAChe package. Due to the proprietary nature of these files, they cannot be opened or edited with any other software. In addition, both CAChe and Babel are old programs that are no longer being developed, though they are still in use. Support for both is limited.
