File Extension CACHE

Files bearing the .cache extension are most often associated with one of two programs and should not be confused with files or folders named "cache". The first of the two programs is a package called Snacc-1.3. It is a compiler that's popular among software developers to convert ASN 1 code into routines in C or C++. The .cache file is nothing more than a temporary file used to store data or information frequently used by the developer. Using this .cache file minimizes the need to recreate repetitive lines of code. These files are simple text and can be opened and edited with a standard text editor. However, only those with knowledge of raw code would find any useful information in the files. Since the .cache files are only temporary text files and not included in the final compiling, errors are virtually non-existent.

A software package by the name of CAChe is the second program known to use the .cache extension. This package is a molecular design program used by scientists to create virtual chemical models on the computer. The software makes it possible for these models to be tested and experimented on without the cost and labor of creating a physical model in the lab. The program assigns the .cache extension to what are called MolStruct output files. These files contain the data that describes the molecular structure of the model they refer to. The format is proprietary to the CAChe software and is not natively supported by any other software. Conversion tools are reportedly available but this has not been confirmed. A program called Babel is a tool to convert dozens of other formats to .cache, but it cannot read the .cache and convert in the other direction.

More Info Regarding File Extension CACHE

The most common error with the .cache file is due to improper file associations. This is caused by the use of the name "cache" used by almost every operating system and literally hundreds of computer programs. Operating systems create files and folders to store frequently used data for fast retrieval. A search of the operating system's root drive will reveal the extensive use of the name. Web browsers use the name as well, and sometimes even create a folder but name it with the file extension .cache, fooling the OS into thinking it's a file. Double clicking this file will result in the web browser opening. To avoid conflicts of this nature, it's recommended that users open all CAChe created files within the native software. In this case, changing file associations could cause other unwanted conflicts.

Errors will obviously occur if trying to open a non CAChe generated .cache file within the software. The program will not recognize a .cache file generated by a web browser, OS, or other piece of software, generating an "unable to open" error. These errors are harmless and pose no threat to the operation of the computer. If users encounter this type of error they should check the name of the file to be sure it is indeed a MolStruct output file. Generally the name will have some relation to the author or chemical structure.

Errors have been reported when the CAChe program itself becomes corrupted, not allowing .cache data to be generated properly or opened in a later session. Recovery is only possible by completely removing and then reinstalling the CAChe package. Due to the proprietary nature of these files, they cannot be opened or edited with any other software. In addition, both CAChe and Babel are old programs that are no longer being developed, though they are still in use. Support for both is limited.
